How Breast Surgery Fared in the ASPS’ List of the Top Plastic Surgery Procedures of 2013

Woman With Top 2013 Cosmetic Surgery ProcedureThe American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently released their highly anticipated annual report detailing the top cosmetic surgery procedures of 2013. In the United States, the top five cosmetic surgery procedures of 2013 were facelift surgery at No. 5, liposuction at No. 4, eyelid surgery at No. 3, nose reshaping surgery at No. 2 and breast augmentation at No. 1.

You may not be particularly surprised to learn that breast augmentation with saline or silicone implants again topped the list of cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the United States in 2013. About 290,000 individuals enhanced their breasts with the use of implants last year, reflecting a 1-percent increase in the number of breast augmentations performed in 2012.

How did other types of cosmetic and reconstructive breast procedures fare in 2013? Let’s take a look.

Breast Lift – NYC breast enhancement surgeon Dr. Joshua A. Greenwald performs many mastopexy, or breast lift, procedures each year. He can perform breast lift surgery by itself to move sagging breasts to a higher, more youthful-looking position on the chest wall (as well to re-position the nipples in a more central position on the breast, if needed) or he can perform mastopexy in conjunction with breast augmentation to both elevate the breasts and restore breast volume. In 2013, about 90,000 Americans underwent breast lift surgery, representing a 1-percent increase in the number of breast lift procedures performed in 2012.

Breast Reduction – Dr. Greenwald performs breast reduction surgery to reduce the size of overly enlarged breasts in both men and women. Excessively pronounced breasts (called gynecomastia in men) can be a source of embarrassment or self-consciousness for either sex. In addition, for many women, having excessively large breasts is physically painful, often causing back and neck pain and making certain types of physical activity such as running difficult, if not impossible. According to the ASPS’ 2013 statistics, just over 41,000 women underwent breast reduction surgery while just over 22,000 men underwent surgical breast reduction.

Breast Reconstruction Perhaps thanks to Angelina Jolie’s highly publicized decision to undergo preventative double mastectomy and breast reconstruction after finding out she had the BRCA1 gene mutation that dramatically increased her chances of developing breast and ovarian cancer, 2013 saw a 4-percent increase in the number of breast reconstruction procedures performed by ASPS members.

If you have been considering undergoing cosmetic (or reconstructive) breast surgery, you are clearly not alone.
