As we approach the dog days of summer in New York, residents are experiencing sweltering heat, a welcome reprieve from a long, cold winter. At our practice, patients frequently ask – when is the best time of year to have breast augmentation surgery? The answer is truly – anytime. In our practice, breast augmentation is one of our most popular procedures and performed year-round. Even though the cooler months are typically our busiest surgery time of the year, we have a large number of patients electing to have their breast augmentation completed during the hot summer months. Additionally, many patients plan their surgery around long weekends or holiday breaks when they have a few extra days to recover without requesting additional time off from work. “Advancements in surgical technique and the use of innovative inoperative devices such as the Keller Funnel have led to improved outcomes and shorter recovery times – making breast surgery a “year-round” option for my patients”, says Dr. Greenwald.
Here are a few things to consider as you choose the timing of your breast augmentation procedure:
1) Allow sufficient time for the breast incisions to heal. I tell my patients not to submerge their incisions for at least 3 weeks following surgery. This includes pools or ocean water.
2) After surgery, breast implants often sit slightly higher on the chest and can take weeks and more commonly, months to “settle”. In clothing the higher implants are less noticeable than in a bikini.
3) You will need someone to care for you the first 24 hours following your breast augmentation. It is important to schedule your surgery when you know you will have a family, friend or loved one available as your caregiver.
3) Recovery is an important aspect of the healing process and ultimately to the final surgical outcome. It is best to stay out of direct sunlight, and cover your incisions as directed at your post-operative appointments.
