Celebrities and their plastic surgery have always been a hot gossip topic and great fodder for tabloid magazines. However, in the age of the internet and selfie-obsessed social media, more people are chiming in on the “did she or didn’t she” plastic surgery debate. In some cases, these public figures are forthright about their decision to undergo aesthetic enhancements however, for many others, the choice to have plastic surgery is more ambiguous, shrouded in secrecy and in some cases, a burka.
Recently, the news featured a story about former Gisele Bundchen who was allegedly filmed along with her sister leaving a plastic surgeon’s office in France disguised in a full-body burka. Although the former Victoria’s Secret darling and highest paid supermodel in the world has not confessed to having any work done, there is speculation she sought the renowned Paris plastic surgeon to address her aging eyes and sagging breasts. Her concern is something many moms can relate to – including those we see in our practice everyday. “Pregnancy and breastfeeding often affects the size and shape of women’s breasts resulting in volume loss, sagging tissue and even stretch marks”, states Dr. Joshua Greenwald “unfortunately, surgical intervention is the only permanent solution to address these concerns.” Whether the fashion model and mother of 2 indeed had these procedures performed is still a mystery, but her story fuels the debate on why there remains a stigma about plastic surgery in today’s society.
Additionally, Iggy Azalea was a recent topic of conversation when she opened up about her personal decision to undergo plastic surgery including rhinoplasty and breast augmentation. In the September issue of Seventeen Magazine, the Australian rapper describes her journey and explains why she decided to share her experience with others, “I’m not denying it. Denying it is lame. I don’t think you should be ashamed if you made a change to yourself, which is why I’ve spoken about the changes I’ve made, like with my breasts.” She added, “Plastic surgery is an emotional journey. It’s no easy feat to live with your flaws and accept yourself—and it’s no easy feat to change yourself. Either way you look at it, it’s a tough journey. There are things that I didn’t like about myself that I changed through surgery. There are other things I dislike but I’ve learned to accept.” The 25-year old also stressed the importance of doing research and selecting the “right time” to have surgery.
The decision to undergo plastic surgery is deeply personal. Whether you share your plastic surgery experience or you keep your decision private is completely up to you. However, it’s refreshing to see more public figures speaking to the positive impact plastic surgery can have in one’s life.
