Bigger isn’t Necessarily Better

The say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder but the physical attributes of what defines someone’s beauty is subject to the same trends and social influences we see in the fashion industry. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, plastic surgery experienced a surge in popularity.

It was not uncommon to see dramatic makeover reality shows promoting drastic transformations of participants. Bigger and bolder was the norm versus small and subtle. Fast forward to 2015 and plastic surgery trends have experienced quite the “downsize.” The prominent, over-sized, and often unnaturally shaped breast implants of the past are now replaced with smaller, more natural-looking implants. Like many beauty trends, the appeal of smaller breasts has been influenced by celebrities and reality stars now using social media to share their opinions and experiences with fans and followers around the globe. In recent years, style icon Victoria Beckham chose to have her larger implants replaced so her breasts were more proportionate with her small frame. She exchanged her implants, reducing her bra size from a 34DD to a modest 34B.

Although recent statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) actually show a 2 percent decrease in the number of breast augmentations, it still remains as one of the most popular cosmetic procedure with nearly 280,000 surgeries performed in 2015. “Breast enhancement surgery is the number one most requested surgical procedure in my practice”, says Dr. Greenwald “however, I have certainly noticed many more of my patients opting for a smaller implant to achieve a more natural look.” He adds, “many women are thinking more in terms of long-term effects and considering if they will still want larger breasts when they are older.”
