Should I replace my breast implants in 10 years?

For patients considering breast augmentation surgery there is much to consider. Who should perform my surgery? What size implant should I choose? Saline or Silicone? Above or below the muscle? It can sometimes be overwhelming and difficult to differentiate fact from fiction. One of the questions I am asked most often from patients considering breast is whether their implants will need to be replaced every 10 years. Although the FDA states breast implants are not considered lifetime devices, women should understand there is not a specific date on when implants should be replaced. “Generally speaking, patients will require a secondary surgery to replace their breast implants but there when this should occur will vary,” says Dr. Greenwald. While the implant manufacturers recommend an implant exchange at 10 years post-surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to have implants which are 15, 20 and even 30 or more years old. Dr. Greenwald adds, “If you are pleased with your size, are not experiencing pain or hardening and there is no sign of rupture, the age of your breast implants should not be a reason to have them removed or exchanged.”

The bottom line is most breast implants do not require replacement at ten years but it is reasonable for breast augmentation patients to expect another breast surgery at some point in the future. If your breast implant has deflated, be certain to check your warranty. Most deflated implants will be replaced at no cost, and you many be eligible for assistance to defray the cost of surgery if the replacement occurs within ten years of your primary breast augmentation.
