Breastfeeding After Breast Augmentation

With the growing acceptance of plastic surgery around the world, women seem to be having breast augmentation procedures performed at younger ages, often in pre-childbearing years. These women frequently have questions about future breastfeeding and safety concerns when they decide to have children. Although it is quite normal for patients to be concerned about this in their youth, they should know the majority of women experience little to no issues with breast feeding as a result of their implants. “Many women assume their ability to breastfeed after breast augmentation will be inhibited, however this is rarely the case,” says Dr. Greenwald.

It is important to remember not every woman will be able to breastfeed – even those not undergoing breast augmentation surgery. If your body has a predisposition for not breastfeeding, then this holds true post breast augmentation. Some patients may also question if placement of the implant affects the ability of future breastfeeding. No studies have shown that implant placement (either above or below the muscle) increases or decreases the likelihood of being able to breastfeed. Additionally, there has been no cause to believe breast implant incision placement – whether through the nipple, armpit or inframammary fold – will interfere with future breastfeeding. “If the ability to breastfeed is worrisome to patients, I would advise them to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon who can answer their questions and address their concerns,” says Dr. Greenwald. He continues “it is not uncommon to see women in my practice who have 2, 3 or more children and have been able to breastfeed after having breast augmentation surgery in their early 20’s.”
