Breast Augmentation: Choosing an Implant Size

Choosing an Implant Size-Photo

When considering breast augmentation, women have several different questions to ponder. Saline or silicone? Above or below the muscle? And one of the most frequently asked questions, what size implant should I choose?

When choosing an implant that is best for your body type and lifestyle, there are several factors to consider including body shape and lifestyle. Women who are taller and/or have a broad body frame often consider a larger implant than someone more petite. Additionally patients who are thin or muscular often select a smaller implant than someone of normal or above average weight. “Patients should also consider their physical activity,” says Dr. Greenwald “someone who is athletic may want to consider a smaller implant size than someone who is less active.”

Implant sizing is measured by volume in cubic centimeters, or “ccs”. Silicone implants may be selected in increments of 25ccs. Saline implants are more “adjustable” since they are made in size increments but can be filled to multiple ranges. Many patients will give a range for their implant sizing, and rely on the surgeon’s expertise in making the final decision. The key is working together with your plastic surgeon to choose the implant that is best for YOU!
